Harold G. Smith served with the Buffalo Soldiers of the 92nd Infantry Division in World War II. Smith joined the unit as a Lieutenant, but after his time in Italy during World War II, and then being recalled to active duty during the Korean War – Smith eventually retired as a Major.
While the unit itself was comprised mostly of African American soldiers, most of its officers were white…and from the south. Smith was white, but he was from upstate New York. That provided him with a different perspective from some of the other officers.
Smith sat down and shared his story with us. In addition to that, Smith also shared some of his memorabilia with us – what a collection!! And he has meticulously maintained his collection – and his foot locker! To see the interview, and pictures of some of his materials, check out the website: 92ndinfantry.org
